Floor smoothing compounds and primers
Browse F. Ball Stopgap subfloor preparation products below. A smooth surface is only one part of preparation: the floor also needs suitable strength, moisture conditions and stability for the chosen covering. Select a compatible system for the actual subfloor rather than choosing solely by price or bag size.
Choose the right preparation product

Stopgap 1200: a smoothing compound used with its specified gauging liquid. Confirm the exact system and application thickness in the current technical data.

Stopgap 500 Micro: a finishing microcoat that can be feathered to a fine edge. It is not a substitute for deeper levelling or structural repairs.

Stopgap 400 Repair: for suitable localised subfloor repairs, subject to its application limits.

Stopgap Fill and Prime: a flexible cement-based primer; check the specified substrates and overlying smoothing compound.

Stopgap P131 and P141: primers with different uses. P141 is intended for suitable non-absorbent surfaces, not as a general primer for porous subfloors.
Assess the subfloor first
Your installer should check moisture, contamination, movement, defects and the floorcovering manufacturer's surface tolerances. Priming requirements depend on the chosen preparation system: do not assume every job needs the same primer or that smoothing compound resolves damp or movement.
Plywood overboarding is a separate preparation method for suitable constructions. It does not automatically correct structural movement or an uneven base. Agree the specification and fixing method before buying.
Calculate materials from the current data sheet
Coverage depends on the product and application depth. Use F. Ball's current product data for the supplied pack, mixing ratio, coverage, working time and time before laying flooring. Do not substitute water or another liquid unless the manufacturer specifies it.
