Click Vinyl Flooring (SPC): The UK Buyer's Guide 2026
Click vinyl describes how the flooring joins together. SPC describes a type of rigid-core construction. They are related terms, but they are not interchangeable: not every click vinyl has an SPC core. Check the manufacturer's description of your exact product.
Start with construction and fitting format
Look for the product reference, total thickness, wear layer, documented use classification and installation method. Do not choose solely on thickness or assume a click system gives every range identical performance. A thicker wear layer is not a guarantee against scratches, dents or a particular lifespan.
Manufacturers issue different instructions for different formats. Karndean's installation library, for example, separates gluedown, rigid core and rigid-core herringbone. Use the matching guide, not instructions for a similarly named colour in another format.
Check the subfloor before buying
A click floor still needs a sound base within the product's flatness and moisture limits. A rigid core does not remove the need to assess movement, damp or high and low spots. Ask your installer what preparation is needed before you compare fitting quotes.
- Confirm whether the existing floor may remain under this specific system.
- Check acclimatisation, room temperature and expansion clearances in the current instructions.
- Plan around fixed kitchen units, doorways, thresholds and the maximum permitted continuous floor area.
- For herringbone, check the required board orientation and locking sequence before ordering.
Underlay: do not automatically add another layer

Bathrooms, sunlight and heating
Check the exact product's room approval. A water-resistant plank does not make the complete room waterproof, and a bathroom approval is not blanket permission for a shower or wet room. Follow the specified perimeter and moisture-control details.
Conservatories, strong sunlight and rooms with large temperature swings need specific consideration. For underfloor heating, confirm compatibility with the complete system and its temperature controls; do not transfer limits from another flooring range.
Calculate packs and the complete project cost
Measure the room, agree the layout and cutting allowance with your installer, then divide the required area by the exact pack coverage and round up to whole packs. Add preparation, approved underlay if required, trims, delivery, fitting and old-floor removal. Use the live listing's price unit rather than a fixed price quoted in a guide.
Keep product and batch details for future reference, and discuss whether spare material is sensible for your project. A later replacement may require dismantling or a manufacturer-approved repair method.
