Click vinyl flooring and SPC click are the same thing
Before anything else, the naming. Click vinyl flooring, SPC click, rigid-core LVT and click LVT are all describing the same product: a vinyl plank with a rigid core and a locking edge that floats over your subfloor without adhesive. Different retailers picked different names and none of them agreed. If you've been comparing two floors and wondering what the difference is, quite often there isn't one.
This guide uses both names, because you'll meet both.
Why click vinyl is the fastest-growing flooring category in the UK
A few years ago, fitting your own floor meant either soft, scratch-prone laminate or wrestling with peel-and-stick vinyl tiles that warped within a season. Then SPC click arrived in the UK market.
SPC stands for Stone Polymer Composite, a blend of stone powder and polymer that creates a rigid, dimensionally stable plank. Click refers to the tongue-and-groove locking system that lets the planks snap together without glue. Combine the two and you get a 100% waterproof flooring product that anyone can install in a weekend.

What makes SPC click different from regular click LVT?
Standard click LVT is typically a flexible vinyl plank. SPC click has a rigid core. Once the planks click together, they form a stable floating floor that doesn't rely on the subfloor being perfectly level. Small unevenness (2-3mm over 1m) gets bridged by the rigid core.
In practice this means easier installation over real-world UK subfloors, more stable joints over years of use, better acoustic performance, and good thermal pairing with underfloor heating.
The spec checklist
1. Total thickness
3mm budget, 4-5mm sweet spot for UK homes, 6mm premium. Thickness is comfort and subfloor tolerance. It is not lifespan — that's the wear layer below.
2. Wear layer thickness
- 0.2mm: entry residential. Bedrooms, dining rooms.
- 0.3mm: standard residential. Most rooms.
- 0.55mm: high-traffic residential or light commercial.
- 0.7mm+: commercial.
This is the number that decides how long your floor lasts, and it's the one retailers shout about least. A 6mm board with a 0.2mm wear layer will wear through long before a 4mm board with a 0.55mm one.
3. Pre-attached underlay
Most quality SPC click planks come with attached IXPE foam underlay.
4. Click system
Branded systems (Unilin, Välinge, Pro-Click) are tested for million-cycle durability.
5. Bevel detail
Most UK domestic SPC click has micro-bevels.
6. Underfloor heating compatibility
Most modern SPC click is UFH-rated up to 27°C surface.
Where click vinyl works best
Excellent for: kitchens, bathrooms/utility, hallways, open-plan living-dining-kitchen, rented properties, UFH rooms.
Less ideal for: conservatories (temperature swing), outdoor spaces, heavy commercial (unless 0.55mm+), stairs (different install).
Installation
A competent DIYer can fit a 20-30m² room in a weekend. Day 1 morning: lift existing floor, level subfloor. Day 1 afternoon: acclimatise boxes 24-48 hours. Day 2 morning: lay starting at longest wall, maintain 8-10mm expansion gap. Day 2 afternoon: threshold strips and skirting.
Tools needed: utility knife, tape measure, pencil, spirit level, tapping block, pull bar, spacers, optional small mitre saw.

Fitting it yourself: the six things that go wrong
Click vinyl is genuinely DIY-able. Almost every failure we hear about traces back to one of these.
1. No expansion gap. The single most common fault. A floating floor expands; if it's hard against the walls it has nowhere to go and it lifts in the middle. Leave 8-10mm around every fixed edge, including pipes, door frames and kitchen units. Skirting and beading hide it.
2. Not acclimatising the boards. Leave the packs flat in the room they're going into for 48 hours at normal room temperature. Fit them cold from a van and they'll shrink at the joints afterwards.
3. An unflat subfloor. "Tolerant" is not "immune". The usual standard is no more than 3mm of deviation over a 2m straight edge. Beyond that the joints flex every time you walk on them and eventually fail. Self-levelling compound is cheap; re-doing the floor isn't.
4. Adding a second underlay. If your planks have underlay already attached — ours do — don't put another one underneath. Too much cushion under a rigid floor overloads the joints.
5. Rushing the first row. If row one isn't dead straight and square to the longest wall, every row after it drifts. Measure the room, work out whether the final row will end up as a sliver, and adjust the first row's width so both edges look deliberate.
6. Not undercutting door frames. Cutting the plank around an architrave looks like a bodge for the life of the floor. Undercut the frame with a flush saw and slide the plank underneath. Five minutes, and it's the detail that separates a DIY floor from a fitted one.
Is click vinyl really waterproof?
The plank is. The floor is a slightly longer answer, and we'd rather give you the long one.
A rigid SPC core doesn't absorb water and won't swell — spill a glass, mop it up, no harm done. That's a real advantage over laminate, which swells at the joints and never recovers.
The nuance is the joints. Click joints are tight and water-resistant, but they aren't sealed. Standing water left for hours can work its way through to the subfloor — a genuine risk from an overflowing bath rather than a splash. For bathrooms and wet rooms, seal the perimeter with a silicone bead behind the beading and deal with spills reasonably promptly. Do that and it will outlast anything else at the price.
How much should you order?
Order 10% more than your room measurement — 15% for herringbone or a diagonal lay. Offcuts are unavoidable, and running out mid-floor means a second delivery and a possible batch mismatch, which will show.
