Underlay for LVT: Glue-Down and Click Compatibility

The best underlay for LVT is the one approved for the exact floor and installation system. Some floors need a specified underlay; some already have it attached; conventional glue-down LVT is normally bonded directly to a suitably prepared base. Buying the thickest or softest option is not a reliable way to improve the floor.

Conventional glue-down LVT

For an adhesive-bonded installation, the flooring is laid on the prepared substrate using a compatible adhesive system. Ordinary carpet or laminate cushioning should not be inserted beneath it. Surface preparation and moisture assessment remain separate requirements; an adhesive is not a substitute for a specified moisture-control system.

For example, F. Ball describes Styccobond F46 as a pressure-sensitive vinyl adhesive. It should not be treated as a solution that makes a damp subfloor ready for installation. Ask the installer to specify the complete system for the conditions found.

Click LVT without attached backing

Read the current instructions for the exact product code. If an underlay is required, check the named product or performance criteria, permitted thickness and compatibility with the locking system. Do not substitute a generic soft carpet or laminate underlay simply because it is available.

Click LVT with integrated underlay

An attached backing is already part of the floor's construction. Extra cushioning is not automatically beneficial and may be incompatible with the joints. For example, Camaro Rigid Core PUR includes an IXPE backing. Check the installation instructions before adding another layer, including any separate moisture membrane.

Approved dryback overlay systems are different

There are manufacturer-specific alternatives to a conventional adhesive-bonded installation. Moduleo Flex Pro Pure, for example, is a self-adhesive underlay for a specified floating dryback system. It is not a universal thin foam underlay for every SPC click floor. Confirm approved flooring, substrate and room conditions with the system instructions before purchase.

Heating, moisture and floor levels

Tell the installer about underfloor heating, the existing base and adjoining floor heights. Check the permitted combined thermal resistance, moisture-control requirements and installation sequence for the products being used. One universal underlay, vapour-barrier thickness or adhesive recommendation cannot cover every room.

  • The brand, range and full flooring product code.
  • Whether it is glue-down or click, and whether backing is already attached.
  • The subfloor type and any moisture-test information from your installer.
  • Whether underfloor heating is present.
  • The proposed underlay or preparation system.
