Click vinyl has become the UK's fastest-growing floor for one simple reason: it gives you a fully waterproof luxury vinyl floor that a competent DIYer can fit in a weekend. What is click vinyl flooring?
Click vinyl planks combine a waterproof vinyl design layer with a rigid mineral core — usually SPC (stone polymer composite) — and a locking edge profile. Planks click together at the edges and the whole floor 'floats' over an underlay, held by its own weight rather than glue. Click vinyl vs laminate
They fit the same way, but they behave very differently when wet. Laminate has a wood-fibre core that swells if water gets into the joints; SPC click vinyl has a mineral core that simply doesn't care. That's why click vinyl has overtaken laminate for kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms — same easy fitting, none of the water anxiety. Laminate still edges it on outright scratch resistance at the budget end, but for most UK homes the waterproof core settles the argument.
Click vinyl vs glue-down LVT
Both are fully waterproof luxury vinyl. Glue-down gives a thinner, more solid-feeling floor and suits pattern work, but demands a near-perfect subfloor and professional fitting. Click's rigid core bridges minor subfloor imperfections, needs no adhesive, and goes down three times faster. If you want the showpiece finish and have the budget for prep, glue down; if you want excellent results with less disruption and cost, click.
Underlay and subfloor
Most SPC click floors need a thin, dense underlay designed for rigid-core vinyl — some ranges have one pre-attached. Don't use a soft carpet-style underlay: too much give will stress the locking joints. The subfloor should be reasonably flat (typically within 3mm over 2m) but doesn't need the mirror finish glue-down demands. Click vinyl works over underfloor heating within the manufacturer's limits (usually a 27°C surface maximum).
Fitting basics
Let the boxes acclimatise in the room for 24–48 hours. Leave a 5–8mm expansion gap at every wall (hidden by beading or skirting), stagger the joints by at least 30cm, and plan your layout so you don't finish with slivers against a wall. A sharp knife, a tapping block and a pull bar are the only specialist kit most rooms need. Allow 5% wastage for straight-lay planks — 10% for herringbone-pattern click.
Where click vinyl works best
Kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, hallways, home offices and rentals — anywhere you want a waterproof, hard-wearing floor without a fitting bill. It's also the practical answer for upstairs rooms and flats, where the floating fit avoids adhesive fumes, and for landlords who may need to replace a floor quickly between tenancies. What does click vinyl cost?
Trade-direct, SPC click vinyl typically sits between laminate and glue-down LVT on price per square metre — and fitting is where it claws money back, because many households fit it themselves or pay for a day's labour rather than three. Factor in underlay (if not pre-attached), beading or new skirting, and 5% wastage.

Is click vinyl really waterproof? Yes — the planks and core are 100% waterproof. Standing water should still be wiped up, as it can find edges of any floating floor.
Can I fit it over old tiles or floorboards? Yes, provided the surface is sound and reasonably flat — one of click's biggest advantages over glue-down.
Does it need underlay? Usually a dense vinyl-specific underlay, unless the range has one attached — never a soft carpet underlay.
Is SPC better than ordinary click vinyl? SPC's rigid core is more stable in sunny rooms and over imperfect subfloors — it's what our Woods Click range uses and what we recommend for most UK homes.
