What Is LVT Flooring? Luxury Vinyl Tile Explained
LVT stands for luxury vinyl tile — a premium vinyl floor that recreates the look of real wood or stone while being tougher, warmer and more water-resistant than the real thing. It's become the UK's default choice for kitchens, hallways and busy family homes, and here's why.
How LVT is made
LVT is built from several layers: a stable backing, a solid vinyl core, a high-resolution photographic design layer (the wood or stone you see), and a clear protective wear layer on top. That wear layer is what resists scratches and scuffs; the vinyl construction is what makes it warm, quiet and water-resistant.
Glue-down vs click
LVT comes two ways. Glue-down is bonded to the subfloor for the thinnest, most seamless, hardest-wearing finish — the designer's and fitter's choice. Click (SPC/rigid-core) locks together as a floating floor over underlay — quicker to fit, DIY-friendly and more forgiving of imperfect subfloors. See our glue-down vs click guide.
Where you can use it
Almost anywhere — including kitchens and bathrooms, thanks to its water resistance. It's warm and quiet underfoot, comfortable to stand on, and stands up to kids, pets and daily traffic.
LVT vs laminate
Laminate has a wood-fibre core and can swell if water gets in; LVT is vinyl-based, water-resistant, softer, warmer and quieter. For wet or high-traffic areas, LVT is usually the better long-term choice.
Is it worth it?
For most homes, yes: it lasts, looks superb, and needs little more than sweeping and the occasional mop. Order a free sample and see for yourself.
