Laminate Flooring Installation Guide
Use this guide to plan a laminate installation, then follow the current instructions for your exact range and locking system. Straight planks and herringbone systems can have different layouts and fitting sequences. This overview does not replace those instructions.
Before ordering and fitting
Measure the room, choose the layout and confirm the pack coverage. Agree an appropriate cutting allowance and order whole packs. Check the delivered reference, batch and condition before starting. Keep the labels and instructions with your order records.
Follow the product's acclimatisation, storage, temperature and humidity requirements rather than assuming every laminate needs the same time. Confirm the room is an approved application, especially for bathrooms, heating systems or areas exposed to significant temperature changes.
Prepare the base
Have the subfloor checked for moisture, flatness and stability. Follow the range's limits and required moisture-control system. Resolve loose boards or unsuitable coverings before fitting; ordinary underlay is not a cure for a damp or structurally unsound floor.
Lay underlay without overlapping its cushioning layers
Choose underlay approved for the laminate and subfloor. Lay the cushioning layer flat with adjoining edges together, not on top of each other. A separate membrane or an integrated foil flap may need overlapping and sealing as specified; that does not mean overlapping the foam itself. Plan movement gaps and the locking sequence
Check required expansion clearances at walls, pipes, fixed objects and transitions. Plan the first and last row widths and joint staggering before cutting. Use the tools and fitting sequence specified for the locking system; do not force an unfamiliar joint or assume all herringbone boards assemble like straight planks.
For a floating installation, trims and fittings must not prevent the floor moving as designed. Check requirements around kitchen units, doorways and the maximum uninterrupted floor area. Quick-Step's installation library provides its own range instructions; another brand needs its own guide.
Final checks
Inspect joints, remove temporary spacers where instructed and fit suitable trims without trapping the floating floor. Follow the range's cleaning and heating-start-up guidance.
