How to Measure for LVT Flooring (Step-by-Step)

Getting your quantities right saves money and second orders. Here's the simple method.

  1. Measure each room as a rectangle. Measure the length and width in metres and multiply them to get the area in square metres (m²). For an L-shaped or alcoved room, split it into rectangles, work out each, and add them together.
  2. Add for wastage. Always order extra to cover cuts, mistakes and future repairs. Add roughly 10% for a standard straight-lay room, and 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone/parquet layouts, which generate more offcuts.
  3. Account for the pattern and direction. Planks are usually laid along the longest wall or toward the main light source — worth deciding before you order.
  4. Check the pack coverage. Each product lists the coverage per pack; divide your total (including wastage) by the pack coverage and round up to whole packs.
  5. Order from one batch. Buy all you need in one go so the shade matches — slight variation can occur between production batches.
