Carpet Installation Guide
A well-planned carpet installation starts before the roll is cut. Use this overview to prepare for your fitter and confirm the right materials; it is not a substitute for training or the carpet manufacturer's fitting instructions.
Measure for the roll, not just the room area
Record maximum room dimensions, door recesses, alcoves and any stairs. Confirm available roll widths, pile direction, pattern repeats, join positions and trimming allowance with the fitter. Dividing total square metres by a roll width is not a reliable cutting plan for several rooms.
Stairs and shaped landings need particular care. Cormar recommends experienced fitting and explains roll-width considerations. Different widths can come from different batches, so agree colour and width requirements before ordering.
Choose a compatible installation system
Confirm the carpet backing, intended room and approved fitting method. Select suitable underlay, gripper and any adhesive or seaming materials for that system. Thickness alone does not decide whether underlay is appropriate. If there is underfloor heating, confirm the complete carpet-and-underlay combination with the relevant manufacturers.
Prepare the room and base
Agree who will move furniture, remove the existing floor and dispose of waste. The base needs to meet the carpet's preparation requirements. Ask the fitter to assess moisture, uneven areas, loose boards, door clearances and transitions. Flag known pipes, cables or heating beneath the floor before any fixings are installed.
Leave cutting, joining and stretching to suitable expertise
Gripper position and pin choice depend on the carpet and the fitting detail; one fixed wall gap is not suitable for every job. Stretch-fit carpet needs the appropriate equipment and technique. Do not assume a knee kicker alone replaces the required stretching equipment. Adhesive-fixed systems have different preparation and bonding requirements.
Agree join positions and pile direction before cutting. Inspect the finished work with the fitter for secure edges, smooth transitions and any areas needing attention. Ask for the product-specific care advice and keep the order details and spare material where practical.
