Glue-Down LVT Flooring: Pros, Cons and Fitting Explained

Glue-down LVT, also called dryback, is supplied as individual vinyl planks or tiles that are bonded to a suitably prepared base. It can suit detailed layouts and many everyday rooms, but the product, adhesive and preparation need to work together.

What you are buying

Preparation comes first

The installer should assess moisture, surface condition, stability and required smoothness. Timber, concrete and existing coverings may need different preparation systems. Do not specify plywood or levelling compound from the surface type alone; identify what is suitable for the actual base and chosen flooring. Check current product instructions before purchasing preparation materials.

Choose the adhesive for the job

An adhesive must be approved for the flooring, substrate and conditions. Heating, strong sunlight, moisture-control systems and the room's use can affect selection. Follow the specified trowel, working time, rolling and loading limits. Do not assume every flooring adhesive is waterproof or that every installation fully cures in 24 hours. Glue-down versus click

Bonded and floating floors need different fitting details, but both require a suitable base. Click flooring does not make dampness or movement acceptable. Water, heating and repairs

Bathroom approval is not wet-room approval. Karndean, for example, states that its flooring is not suitable for wet rooms in its UK FAQs. Check your exact product and system for room use and heating compatibility. Follow its temperature and commissioning limits.

A damaged bonded plank may be replaceable, but matching material, adhesive removal and the condition of the base determine the repair. Click products can also have approved repair methods; do not assume replacement is impossible. Ask for the appropriate procedure before lifting or cutting anything.

Budget and order
