Flooring Care & Maintenance

Flooring care and maintenance

Look after your floor and it will look its best for years. Care is straightforward and differs slightly by floor type. Here is how to keep each one in good condition.

LVT, SPC and click vinyl

Sweep or vacuum regularly to lift grit, which is the main cause of surface scratches. Clean with a well wrung damp mop and a pH neutral floor cleaner. Avoid steam mops, wax, polish and abrasive pads, which can damage the wear layer. Use felt pads under furniture legs and a barrier mat at external doors.

Laminate

Laminate does not like standing water. Vacuum or dust mop regularly and clean with a slightly damp, not wet, microfibre mop. Wipe spills quickly, never let water pool on the joints, and avoid steam cleaners. A laminate specific cleaner keeps the finish clear of residue.

Carpet and carpet tiles

Vacuum regularly, more often in high traffic areas. Treat spills straight away by blotting, not rubbing, from the outside in. Periodic professional or low moisture cleaning keeps the pile fresh. See our carpet maintenance guide for detail.

Sheet vinyl

Sweep or vacuum, then clean with a damp mop and a mild vinyl cleaner. Avoid abrasive scourers and solvent based products. See our sheet vinyl maintenance guide.

General dos and don'ts

Do use doormats to trap grit and moisture, lift heavy furniture rather than dragging it, and follow the manufacturer cleaning advice for your specific range. Do not use bleach, solvents, wax or steam unless the manufacturer states it is safe. Protect against strong prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade any floor over time.
